I watched fragments of the Oscars this year, mainly because I forgot they were on. The only real reason I wanted to watch was to see John Stewart host the show. And from what I've read online, he did a great job and threw plenty of jabs to the rich and reality-detached Hollywood elite.
But one thing has really chapped my hide lately: the fact that Hollywood keeps harping about us (the movie goers) NOT going to the movies. They blame us with pirating movies, waiting for the movies to come out on DVDs, etc. This, in turn, causes the box office numbers to fall drastically. The thing that chaps my hide is that the quality of movies coming out is crazy sub-par. Honestly! What was the last "great" movie you saw at the theater? What was the last movie you saw a preview for and said, "I'm taking vacation to go see the 1:00 PM showing of THAT!"? There really haven't been many "must see's" in a while.
But yet, Hollywood doesn't realize this. They think they're losing money because everybody and their dog are pirating (which, to some extent may be true, but cannot account for more than 2% of their total loss). If Hollywood put out better movies (quality vs quantity), brought down the price to compete against the cheapness of DVD rentals, and theaters enforced behavioral issues in the theater, I'm sure that theater attendance would rise drastically.
I just needed to say that. It's been bugging the heck out of me!
